Who wrote the Torah Perhaps the explanation lies in the distinct possibility that the former Jewish Slaves were not literate. The spoken language was probably aramiaic so that it is unlikely that they could read Hebrew if they could read at all. I also think the fact that scribes write the Torah letter by letter rather than word by word means that someone who does not read Hebrew could make a copy of the Torah without knowing what it means.
