Jewish Community in Zhitomir Celebrates Productive Season

The Jewish community in Zhitomir, Ukraine, is celebrating a series of accomplishments, from the construction of a new fence protecting its local cemetery to the recent circumcisions of three boys and one 60-year-old man who decided to embrace their heritage.

Zhitomir, Ukraine’s Jewish cemetery got a new fence earlier this month. The community is led by Chief Rabbi Shlomo Wilhelm, a Chabad-Lubavitch emissary serving the region.

Zhitomir My paternal Grandfather was from Zhitomir--came to South Africa circa 1885 followed by the rest of the family

Would love to obtain records ,if possible

Also considering a visit 2012 ---I believe Zhitomir is about 80 kms from Kiev Reply

Zhitomir cemetery My father's parents came from Zhitomir and Radomyshl. Are there any burial records available for Zhitomir? My Grandmother left her family there in 1909. I would be interested in finding my great-grandparents graves. They were Heschel Chait and Leah Chait. They had 10 daughters --only the two youngest came to the US. The others as far as I know perished in Zhitomir. Reply

Zitomir My family comes, on my father's side from Kobrin (now in Belarus) and Briansk (now in Poland). In reading Jewish history and therefore somewhat familiar with "Jewish geography," I had thought that places like Zitomir were made "Judenrein" by the Germans. How wonderful to find out that I'm wrong. Chabad has done it again, reviving Yiddishkeit where it was thought to be over. Miracles and wonders never cease! Reply
